Teeth are for life if gums are for life — nearly all tooth loss starts with gum disease, not cavities. Here is what actually matters at each stage, minus the marketing.

Bleeding gums are not normal

Gums that bleed when you brush are inflamed, not “sensitive.” Two weeks of thorough twice-daily brushing with interdental cleaning reverses early gingivitis. If bleeding persists past that, book a hygiene visit — tartar below the gumline needs professional removal.

Sensitivity has causes, and fixes

Cold sensitivity usually means exposed roots from gum recession or enamel wear from grinding. Desensitizing toothpaste helps, but a night guard or bonding solves the cause. Mention it at your checkup rather than switching to lukewarm drinks forever.

Whitening, honestly

Whitening is safe on healthy teeth and fillings won’t change shade — which is why we whiten before replacing visible fillings, not after. Beware charcoal pastes: they are abrasive and the “whitening” is scratched enamel.

The six-month habit

Checkups catch problems when they are small, cheap and painless. The patients who spend least on dentistry over a decade are the ones we see most often — prevention beats repair every time.
